This handwoven Tajik jacket (joma) combines two distinct sides in one piece. The outer side is a painterly red-black-and-green ikat with loose, brushstroke-like shapes. Flip it inside out to reveal a bold black-and-white side with a graphic pattern. This one-of-a-kind Tajik jacket works equally well for casual and evening looks.
What is a joma?
Joma is a traditional Tajik jacket – one of the most distinctive garments of Central Asian dress, worn for generations in Tajikistan as a light, loose outer layer. In Poland it’s sometimes mistakenly called a “kimono-style jacket” because of its simple, wrap-front cut – in reality, joma has its own, separate tailoring and design tradition, unrelated to Japan. ANORA sews jomas following this Tajik tradition, pairing authentic pattern with a shape that’s comfortable for everyday wear in Europe.
Craft and material
Every joma in the ANORA collection is hand-sewn – no production line, no rush, so no two pieces are identical. The base material of most of our jomas is adras – a traditional ikat fabric blending silk and cotton, characteristic of Central Asian craft. The ikat pattern is created by dyeing the threads before weaving, giving it that typical, slightly “blurred” outline – a natural feature of the technique, not a flaw.
Reversible cut – two jackets in one
All ANORA jomas are reversible: they have two distinct, fully finished sides that can be worn facing out interchangeably. Buying one joma gets you two outfits, in effect.
Where does joma come from?
This Tajik jacket (joma) comes from traditional dress worn in the region for generations as light everyday and festive outerwear. Patterns, colours and weaving technique vary depending on where the fabric originates. ANORA draws on this tradition, bringing authentic ikat patterns into a shape that’s comfortable for everyday use in Europe.
How to wear a joma
A joma works both as a light coat thrown over a simple outfit and as a bold accent in a more toned-down look. Wear it open, over a shirt and jeans, for a relaxed everyday look – or belted at the waist as a striking piece for an evening outfit. Our Joma Midi – Ruby Ikat, reversible, one of a kind makes an equally striking choice.
Size and fit
All jomas have a universal, oversized fit. Mini – M, Midi – L, Maxi – XL (floor-length).
Care
We recommend hand-washing in cool water or dry cleaning, and storing on a hanger or laid flat, away from sunlight. (To be confirmed against this specific piece’s care label.)
FAQ
Is every joma different? Yes – this is a single, one-of-a-kind piece.
Is joma the same as a kimono? Not quite – joma has its own Tajik history and design.
How do I choose a joma if I don’t know my size? Just pick a length (Mini, Midi or Maxi).
